As a kid I was never a particularly good artist, in fact I failed just about every art class all the way through college, however it was not for a lack of trying. When I was 11 years old, I gained 2 friends who were awfully competitive and we began to compete at just about everything - including drawing. We would pick an image and see who could draw it better, quicker.
I sucked.
But I kept going. Day after day, year after year. Eventually, I switched to the digital medium, and whilst fun, this introduced a whole host of new challenges, yet I didn't stop. And whilst I've still got a long road ahead, I proved to myself that with enough time and patience, any skill can be learnt, no talent necessary.

Red Terracotta Sea
In 1978, Danny and his family were put on a target list. They had to escape their home in Laos. Once a 7-year-old refugee, Danny is now living in Australia. In this documentary he shares his journey; from growing up in a war-torn country and escaping across the Mekong River, to spending eight months in a refugee camp and finally arriving in Australia. Danny outlines the challenges he and his family faced upon their journey and the harsh conditions they were subjected to. Now as a maths teacher, he inspires a new generation of Aussies and in this documentary, shows us the danger of presenting refugees as statistics, rather than individuals with stories worth telling. This short documentary was completed in a team of three for a University project. My official role was as the Camera operator, however, due to our tight-knit team our work often overlapped we all contributed and assisted in all roles. The animation style within this documentary was put forth by me and I demonstrated to the Director how this is done so we could share the creation of this component. All images and sound are under the creative commons or created by us. |
